Our Mission

Armatus Oceanic provides expert consultancy for high-profile projects through scientific research, technology and communications focused on the deep ocean and other extreme marine frontiers.

Our VENTURE

Armatus Oceanic is new deep-sea venture focused on making the deep sea accessible to all though either human or robotic exploration of the deep sea or bringing the deep sea to audiences through expert storytelling.

Founded by Dr. Alan Jamieson, author of ‘The Hadal Zone, Life in the Deepest Oceans’, and world leader in hadal science: the oceans deeper than 6 kilometres, Armatus Oceanic is an avid team with over 40 years’ combined experience in working at the most extreme marine frontiers.

Our Expertise

In just 20 years, the team have participated in 82 scientific research expeditions ranging from coastal regions, open ocean, deep polar seas, to the deepest places in every ocean on the planet. We have relentlessly published over 130 peer reviewed scientific papers ranging from new species descriptions, deep-sea biology and ecology, as well as new methods and technology for full ocean depth exploration.

Our SUCCESSES

We are the scientists and explorers who were the first to film fish over 6 km deep (click here), found the deepest ever prawn (click here), first to film the ‘supergiant amphipod’ (click here), found the deepest ever eel (click here), then found and described the deepest fish in the world, a few times (click here). We recently found the deepest octopus ever (Click here), and then the deepest squid (click here). We were also the first to discover extraordinary high levels of pollution and micro-plastic ingestion at the deepest places on Earth (click here and here).

Our REACH

We have a relentless track record in publishing our work in peer reviewed scientific journals and making it available to larges audiences quickly.  Likewise, our findings and discoveries frequently garner international media attention and global publicity.

The scientific outputs and media coverage of our activities over the last 4 years has been evaluated independently to be the equivalent of $7billion of advertising having reached 7.6 billion people through nearly 3000 articles in the media. Our work has prestigious outlets such as The New York Times, The New Yorker, The Economist, National Geographic, Popular Science, Newsweek, Outside Magazine, Wired, and The Atlantic.

Our VOICE

Our team is fervent about science communication and frequently deliver well-received public and invited presentations in a style contrary to the sterile conformity of conventional scientific outreach, unashamedly relaying our enthusiasm and adventures spanning corporate, academic, higher educational, public, art collaboration, museums, oceanariums and podcasts.
